Exposing your POIs using Google Maps and SEO strategies

The main goal for any website is to achieve web presence, but what is the point of having web presence if you can’t be found? – and by “found” I mean besides ‘Googling’ for ‘yourwebsite.com’. This is where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies come into play.

Today, with the number of Google Maps mashups increasing every single day, there needs to be more attention given to exposing all the location based data and points of interest that you have spent a lot of time, money and effort to gather, organize and publish.  The marriage between Google Maps mashups and SEO is key, without it you will have a delicious pizza with fascinating toppings and no delivery van.

SEO strategies that are applicable to web pages can also be implemented to Google Maps mashups; for example strategies applied to exposing shopping catalogues on online retailers’ e-commerce sites can also be used to expose points of interest from a database. We can also look at how blogs use SEO friendly URLs such as:

http://www.yourblog.com/2007/07/post-title-and-description

instead of:

http://www.yourblog.com/?post=123

to provide descriptive and unique URLs to every post on the blog and implement similar methods for your mashup. For example instead of having:

http://www.yourmusicmashup.com/markerid=4

it should be

http://www.yourmusicmashup.com/michael-jackson.
